Region VIII: Eastern Visayas  


Eastern Visayas has a Total land area of 23,251.10 km2 

  • It consist of 6 provinces, 1 Independent city, and 1 Highly Urbanized City
              Biliran                         Samar
              Eastern Samar             Southern Leyte
              Leyte                          Ormoc City
              Northern Samar           Tacloban

  • Composed of 3 main islands namely leyte and samar, connected by the san junico bridge, and biliran island.

PEOPLES
  • The waray peoples are a subgroup of a Visayan people whose primarily language is the Waray Language (aslo-called Lineyte-Samarron), an Austronesian language native to the islands of Samar, Leyte and BIliran.
LANGUAGE
  • Waray-waray is the lingua franca of the Eastern Visayas Region, and mostly spoken on the island of Samar, BIliran, Tacloban and northern-leyte.
FESTIVALS

                                                    KARAPAYAN FESTIVAL

    • A colorful festival de picting how the early guiuan townsfolk enjoyed nature's bounties, and rich marine life, fertilize land, verndant forest.
    • It also thanksgiving to their patroness, the blessed virgin mother.

                                              BUYOG-BUYOGAN FESTIVAL 

  • Abuyog "BUYOG" (bees) dancers, depict the origin of the town's name in well choreographers in dance.
  • It was held during August of 29th

SINULOG FESTIVAL
    • The word sinulog comes from the cebuano adverb which roughly means "like water current movement."
    • It describe the forward and one step backward movements of the sinulog dance.

GASTRONOMY

                                                                      MORON
    •  Moron is pronounced like moron. Moron is like the regular suman but the rice is cooked in coconut milk and mixed with a bit of cocoa. 
    • The Moron has the similar consistency of the suman and the cocoa enchances the taste.
    • Also moron is so soft that you can cut the small tube with a pair of scissor down the middle and just squeeze it out.

                                                             BINAGOL 

    •  Binagol is pronounced with a longer stress on the "A". Binagol is made of a root crop named talyan. Coconut milk and sugar. It is then molded into a coconut shell. 
    • Binagol is quite sweet with the distinct taste of the root crop.

                                                        SUMAN BILIRAN


    • The tasty suman of naval of different flavors like the tinambiran (a combination of white and brown glutinous rice), plain white suman and suman with mango marmalade are emerging nowdays.
    • It has gathered thousands of ordered at a trade fair last 2012.
